let's go fly a kite

One of the things that I love about Minnesotans is that they are one hardy group of people - i.e. this weekend's Lake Harriet Kite Festival. First, this is taking place on the surface of a frozen lake, and second, it was maybe 10 degrees out. Not ideal kite flying conditions as noted by Christiana who said the last time she'd seen kites was on a beach. But we were all still out there having a great time!

The dogs decided to spend their extra hour lounging in the newly re-decorated living room. Everyone in the family thinks it's extra cozy now :)

My younger son has been making these little houses out of dixie cups for the past week, and when I came down the stairs this morning, he had them all lined up on the windowsill. I just couldn't resist photographing and posting...

It's the last day of August which means fewer afternoons at the beach...

and less evening swimming/fishing/skipping rocks off the dock sessions...

 

It also means the MN State Fair which we thoroughly enjoyed yesterday!

flew by

I came across this print by Gennine today and it made me a little sad because summer is almost at an end. We had oddly cool weather most of the summer, so my boys didn't get much time at the beach and pool or running through the sprinkler.

My mother took this picture of my older son a couple summers ago and it is one of my very favorites. It evokes the excitement of something as simple as a sprinkler and a hot day. It's also one of those photos where the personality of the subject is captured so exactly - the look on his face and the joyfulness of his posture is just SO him.

We're getting ready for the boys to go back to school now, but I hope that we have a nice Indian summer so that we can enjoy a few more evenings at the beach nearby and a couple Saturday and Sunday afternoons' worth of running through the sprinkler...
