Picnics Under the Moon

trust me

Nacho_libre

I already know that you are not going to believe this, but I swear on all things wallpaper the Nacho Libre soundtrack is amazing. AMAZING. I had dinner at our musically trustworthy friend's house on Sunday and kept asking, "What are we listening to?" Each and every time, the answer was, "The Na-CHOOOOOOO Libre Soundtrack!" Here - try it out for free first. You can thank me later.

lonely deer

We went to a concert with friends ages ago now, and I was listening to the album today and couldn't believe that I hadn't posted anything about it at the time. The opening band was from Sweden and we thought they were called "Lonely Deer." Come to find out, they were actually Loney Dear, and they were awesome. Enjoy!

purple silver annivesary

Purple2

I can't believe that I haven't mentioned that it was recently the 25th anniversary of Prince's Purple Rain. Prince is obviously one of Minnesota's favorite sons, and the movie was filmed at Minneapolis rock shrine First Ave. I can remember playing the soundtrack on a friend's boombox during recess when we were in fourth grade and dancing madly to "Let's Go Crazy." In honor of his purpleness, here's a gem of a cover.

rock me amadeus

We had dinner last night with friends and a neighbor who's a musician. He was all about Phoenix, so I had to check their latest album out this morning. As I expected, it's awesome. And available for downloading for just $5 on Amazon right now. By the way, have you noticed how freakishly accurate the "You may also like" functions on both Amazon and iTunes are? When I pulled this album up, I owned EVERY SINGLE ONE on the list. Yikes. Either Amazon's computers are about to become self aware and take over the world or I have become predictable :)

summer soundtrack

It's official - the soundtrack to summer '09 around here is Passion Pit's Manners. And this wins Hygge & West's award for best use of slightly wallpaper-like surfaces in a music video.

face to face (almost)

Face2Face

Wade and I and a couple of our friends went to the Elton John and Billy Joel concert last Tuesday. Well, we sort of did... The concert took place at Wrigley Field (baseball stadium of the Chicago Cubs) and our seats were on one of the roof tops. Usually that's perfect if you're there to watch a baseball game... you're sitting right across the street from the stadium and the view is great. However for the concert, the stage was facing the home plate so we had a fantastic view of the crowd enjoying actually seeing Billy and Elton.

It was still a phenomenal experience. The sound was great, we could see the light show and the roof top was pretty packed, so it just felt like a big party. And it was all-you-can eat and drink too! I wish someone had told me they were going to serve food all night, because I filled up within the first twenty minutes and then the waiters kept coming out with new types of foods every half hour. They even had ice cream, cookies and brownies for dessert!

I'm really glad we could experience the two musical legends in concert. I hope some day I'll get to go again and be able to not only hear them, but actually see them!

me encanta

Sidebox-mariachi-band-r

Maybe it's the New Mexican in me, but boy, do I love a good mariachi band. In fact, we had one at our wedding - I'm working at my mother in law's today because our washer is broken, or I'd have scanned the photo from the old wedding album.

My amazing friend Jess just sent me this link to mariachi cover songs, and all I can say is, "Ole!" And speaking of cross cultural song covers, at our last big family event we danced to the polka Macarena, performed live by a polka band mostly made up of distant cousins of mine (Christiana was there, she can vouch for this). Am hoping the reunion this weekend will feature more polka classics - will keep you posted...

beach music

Photo

I went over to Hidden Beach with my son and some friends for a little mid-afternoon break today. It's actually chilly here so the beach was unusually empty - normally there are all kinds of interesting people and music. Today, just one lone guy with a guitar. But he did an especially stirring rendition of Terence Trent D'Arby's Sign Your Name, so I've tried to recreate it for you here. Speaking of TTD, what ever happened to that guy?

shake your money maker

The Black Crowes are playing down the street from us tonight, so I thought I would post this because they were the very first concert I went to without adult supervision. For some reason, my normally very strict parents let me drive an hour and a half to Albuquerque with a group of friends for this show. After the concert, we all went to the IHOP on Montgomery and I remember feeling so fun and grown-up. This song never fails to remind me of being 17, carefree and eating pancakes at midnight with friends.

Have a great weekend!

running around

Today is one of those days - too many things to do and too little time... So here's a playlist to listen to in case you're also a chicken with your head cut off today.
